'Eenadu (2009)' Review: Unexpected Outcome

The much hyped movie ‘Eenadu’ has finally hit the screens and given the names involved, the expectations have been quite high. Whether it has been able to reach the standard of the original or not, let us see.

Story

Former Police commissioner Eshwar Prasad (Venkatesh) recalls the one day thatchanged his life forever. The story begins with the call he gets from a stranger (kamal) who says that bombs have been planted across various parts of the city. What is assumed to be a prank turns out to be real with a bomb close to the police headquarters. Eshwar takes matters seriously and ropes in two of his best men Gautham and Arif Khan (ganesh) on the job. The stranger demands the release of four most wanted terrorists responsible for bomb blasts in the city and across the nation. After a while, Eshwar complies to the demand and gets the accused to the said site. However, a sudden surprise awaits the police force and also those who were expecting a typical release. What is that and why it happens forms the rest of the story.

Performances

Kamal Haasan was alright with his act but there was not much energy, Venkatesh was smart and looked apt for the role but could have been better. Ganesh Venkatraman was impressive, Anuja was standard, Lakshmi was okay, Santhanam was normal, Poonam Kaur was brief, the actors who did the role of the terrorists did justice to their role, others didn’t have much to speak about.

Technical aspects

The script has been written weakly and the screenplay was not riveting. Dialogues were decent and so was the background score. Cinematography could have been better to create a better impact, editing seems to have gobbled up few key shots which has slackened the momentum, re-recording seems to be in trouble since the lip sync was missing most of the time during the first half. Costumes were natural and realistic while the art department didn’t have much to do.

Director’s portrayal

The director has not been able to extract the best out of two great stars despite agood theme. He was unable to handle the script deftly and could not create an intense screenplay. There was also a lack of visual thought on the angles of camera to give that impact on the screen and so it looked a very simple movie. He could have worked on making it crisp but that finesse was missing.

Critic’s view

The film is the remake of the Bollywood hit ‘A Wednesday’ but by no means is this comparable to that. Though there is heavy ammunition in the form of star cast and the technical aspects, the content was not delivered properly. It was clear that the movie was running mildly and it lacked the punch to engage the audience. The perspective has to be to watch the film without comparing the original and that would give it some marks. This could be appreciated for its message but not much for the mass audience to see.

Analysis:
A few said that Kamal wouldn’t have chosen to work in this movie as his performance is not up to the mark. Some from back seats murmured, Prakash Raj would be a better choice than Kamal Hasan for this role.

Audiences find a kind of terror watching Naseeruddin Shah’s performance in ‘A Wednesday’. But Kamal couldn’t bring that. And Chakry Toleti is successful in copying the film from original but failed with some senseless additions.

Directorial Flaws:

* Kamal Hasan talking about a pregnant woman getting raped nude in public, while dealing with terrorists, on phone with Police Commissioner is out of the box. That has confused audiences.
* And there is no reasonable conclusion to Poonam Kour’s role. Has she got down from train? The circle hasn’t completed.
* Showing Lakshmi in the role of Chief Secretary in not in tune with requirement (although director tried to depict the ego clashes between IAS and IPS officers in general)

Story Line:

Ravi Teja is associated with a certain kind of films where there the winning formula is standard. It has a hero with a “ I care a damn attitude”, a glamorous heroine who needs to get forcefully wooed by the hero, 3-4 strong comic sub-plots with hilarious one-liners, villains who loom in the background and get thrashed by the hero at regular intervals!!! This formula has worked successfully with the last example being the superhit “Kick”. So Anjaneyulu uses the same winning formula to deliver another entertainer that will definitely satisfy all Ravi Teja fans.

What is it about : Anjaneyulu (Ravi Teja) works in the production department at HM TV channel where his attitude towards work is to avoid all work at any cost. He is pampered by his father (Nasser) to no end and he believes in just enjoying life. He soon bumps into Anjali (Nayantara) and then spends the rest of the first half wooing her in his rough style while bugging his channel’s “creative director” (Brahmanandam) with his antics. Cut to the second half where he suddenly joins Bada (Sonu Sood) who has a flourishing criminal network in the city and a running rivalry with Kota Srinivas Rao. The motive for his joining Bada is not revealed till the last twenty minutes after which Anjaneyulu ties up all the loose ends with his revenge story, overpowers the criminals single-handedly and lives happily ever-after with Anjali who has been helpfully appearing whenever a song is required.

What is Good: The movie is an out-and-out Ravi Teja film with him being there in almost every frame of the movie. He excels in this role again since he has so confidently played this character in almost every movie of his. His comic timing, witty one-liners and fight sequences keep the audience occupied. He is backed by some superb comedy by Brahmanandam and others. Nayantara provides the glamour in the songs while Sonu Sood looks menacing enough while the story moves along at a decent pace.

What is bad: The movie at times becomes predictable given its “Pokiri” hangover of a hero going undercover in the villain’s gang to work against them. Some of the scenes where Ravi Teja bashes up 10-15 guys singlehandedly seem to be over-the-top and violent. Nayantara is relegated to the background except when the songs appear. She and Kota Srinivas Rao have very poorly sketched characters as they appear and disappear at the director’s will without any meaningful contribution to the storyline. The music is catchy but the song picturisation is average with the item number by Kim Sharma forgettable.

General Opinion:This is a movie for all Ravi Teja fans and can be watched if you are looking for a timepass movie that keeps you entertained. The director dedicates the movie to his Guru – Puri Jagannath and Puri Jaganath’s influence is strongly seen in the “Pokiri” style storyline. One of the fight sequences set in Golconda fort reminds you of a similar sequence in “Pokiri”.

Tailpiece: Prakash Raj makes a short and powerful guest appearance playing Jaiprakash who is an ex-IAS officer wanting to change the society. He models this character on the real-life person of Dr Jaiprakash of the Lok Satta party!
